NEW YORK, NY – Oct. 23: McGruff, a 2-year-old American Bulldog/Pit Bull mix, came to us from the city shelter, where he had been waiting in public adoptions, despite suffering from severe ear infections that will require a total ear canal ablation (removal) and bulla osteotomy surgery, in addition to have been diagnosed with pneumonia. While he is recovering our plan of care includes pain management, targeted training towards his visual senses and a long term foster home closer to our specialists.
McGruff is unable to hear most things due to his chronic ear infections and the resulting growths/masses coming from inside his ears (he will be completely deaf after surgery), so his foster mom, Jessica, has begun sign and vibration training, and created opportunities for McGruff to use his visual senses, which includes slow walks along the East River each morning as the sun rises. We are simply astounded at how gentle, stoic and calm McGruff is, despite all that he is enduring. This dog defines resiliency and we are honored to walk alongside him!
We expect McGruff to have his surgery on Nov. 11 and from there, it’s only up for this handsome, dog and people friendly social butterfly!
