Sept. 23, 2019: HURRICANE DORIAN SURVIVOR UPDATE – JACK’S STORY: In May 2018 two dogs were brought to Abaco Shelter after they had been found abandoned in the island’s garbage dump, not an uncommon occurrence, unfortunately. JACK and JOEY eagerly accepted a kennel together (we’ll share more about JOEY later) and settled into shelter life together. JACK quickly emerged as a playfully submissive life-of-the-party kind of guy and with his short stumpy legs and longer lab-like body, he was a happy site to see, bounding around with playful leaps.
JACK eagerly seeks attention from other dogs and affection from people. His face wears some very deep old scaring – two gashes are cut between his eyes and a third healed wound is present on the top of his head. None appear to be bites and the origin remains unclear, but JACK is not fearful of people and for this we are grateful. When we travelled down to South Florida last week to meet our new intakes we didn’t get a clear read on this little black dog who was shy with us, but after his arrival yesterday via ✈️ Wings of Rescue (?see video in comments – thank you!) we took our time getting to know him and fell madly, deeply in love with this silly dog who opened up quickly.
Estimated to be 2-3 years old, JACK is dog friendly and would love a home with other pets! While he and JOEY enjoyed their play date yesterday after ten days apart, we do not feel they are inseparably bonded and so we are not seeking a home for the two of them together. JACK is also heartworm positive and we will begin immediate treatment for him. We will continue to cover the expensive treatment to save his life after he is adopted so please don’t let this discourage you from bringing an incredible little dog home, one whose miracle story survival through a direct hit from a Cat 5 hurricane is just as remarkable as he is. ❤️ This Casanova is being fostered in Cortland Manor, NY and can’t wait to meet you!
