Global Animal Welfare

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.

Animal welfare is a global issue that requires reaching beyond our local communities. In November 2013, we launched our global outreach program by rescuing two eight-week-old potcake siblings, Bay and Breezy, from the Bahamas. Both faced serious injuries and were rescued from euthanasia. After fostering and rehabilitation, Breezy recovered from hernia surgery, and Bay underwent a foreleg amputation before being adopted together into a loving Maryland home.
In February 2014, we partnered with SPCA International’s Operation Baghdad Pups, rescuing animals in Iraq and facilitating their safe transport to the US. Following this mission, we also rescued Ameera and Stevie Nicks, who lost their intended homes, placing them in foster care until they found loving adoptive families.
Our global animal welfare efforts include providing transport grants for deployed servicemen and women to bring home animals they rescued overseas. Named after our first international rescue, the Houdini Grants assist travelers who rescue animals abroad but need help covering transport costs. These programs rely on donations, and supporters can specify their donation preferences.
